       Today we did and learned about genre and iconography. Genres in films are the categories that help defines a movie based on its narrative elements. Iconography is using certain visual images or symbols used to deliver key information about the story, genre, or time frame. We put one genre that we wanted to research and then picked a well-known actor in that specific genre and talked about their different characters in various films.   Symbolic   Codes Closed Reading of  VALERIAN Official Trailer # 1 (2017) Symbolic codes are significant to the audiences because they can decode what's going on in the media product using them. They also decode them differently based on their social and cultural influences. These codes are very helpful as it helps show more than what meets the eye. They are used by media producers to add depth and further meaning to their media products. Some symbolic codes used in the film were costumes, lighting, setting, and hair. Ferdinand de Saussure's Theory of Semiotics Ferdinand de Saussure is known as modern linguistics and semiology. His theory tends to be viewed as the advocate of the thought that "language does not reflect reality but rather constructs it". His theory describes the signifier as the sound and the signified is the thought.  Previously known as North America, Panem is now a country separated  into 12 districts.  They host an annual game called the Hunger Games, which is a televised competition  in which two teenagers, a boy, and a girl, are picked at random to fight to the death. They are called tributes. This scene is where they are  picking tributes from district  12, the one Katniss lives  in. They started off by picking the girl and the one who got chosen was Primrose, Katniss's little sister. Katniss then volunteered to take her place.   Charles Peirce's Theory of Semiotics Peirce's Theory has a critical point which is that the meaning of a sign is created by the interpretation it stimulates in those using it. It also uses interpretations in which to strengthen his claims that semiosis is a process.  Today we did an assignment with our groups on lighting in the create film. Lighting in the film helps to create a visual mood, atmosphere, and/or setting that the audience can see. All of my teammates took different sections of the assignment, I did  Light Color, General Information and Synopsis for Anna, Lighting set up, and some of Light Direction.

  Roland Barthes' Theory of Semiotics Roland Barthes's theory of semiotics   helps  different  cultures and  societies break down the process of reading signs and  interpreting  them.  This theory  is about reading signs and with a signifier, the physical form of what it is, and the signified , the meaning that is being interpreted . The denotation of a sign is its literally meaning (e.g. Katniss' wedding dress denotes wedding dress0. A connotation is the meaning behind a sign; for example, the wedding dress turning into a blueish black dress with wings, resembling a mocking jay, can give a meaning of rebellion.  The movie is the second one in the franchise "The Hunger Games" where  Katniss and Peeta are coming back home from their unexpected victory at the 74th Annual Hunger Games, which was the very first time there were two victors.
