Semiotics Preliminary Exercise

 Roland Barthes' Theory of Semiotics

Roland Barthes's theory of semiotics helps different cultures and societies break down the process of reading signs and interpreting them. This theory is about reading signs and with a signifier, the physical form of what it is, and the

signified, the meaning that is being interpreted. The denotation of a sign is its literally meaning (e.g. Katniss' wedding dress denotes wedding dress0. A connotation is the meaning behind a sign; for example, the wedding dress turning into a blueish black dress with wings, resembling a mocking jay, can give a meaning of rebellion.

The movie is the second one in the franchise "The Hunger Games" where Katniss and Peeta are coming back home from their unexpected victory at the 74th Annual Hunger Games, which was the very first time there were two victors. Now this movie is based on the 75th Annual Hunger Games where the victors from past Hunger games are playing. Right now there are at the tribute interview and while Katniss was being interviewed, they told her to show off her dress which originally was supposed to be her wedding dress. Also, while Peeta was being interviewed he also mentions Katniss being pregnant which cause an uproar from the audience demanding they stop the games.
