Beat
I: The Opening Image |
A visual image that represents the
central struggle & tone of the story. ·
A snapshot of the main character's problem before the adventure
begins. ·
It sets the tone, mood, genre, and setting of the movie. |
||||||
|
Document
the setting, location (inside-outside), genre, theme, tone, the mood of the
film. It includes narrative elements such as text, voice-over, etc. |
The opening film starts off
with a summary of what the community and world that the characters live in. The
film is a drama film filled with action, fantasy, and science fiction. It is
based upon a community that is isolated from the outside world. The community
they live in is very uniform with rules that make sure everyone is unique
from one another. The world in which most of the characters see is black and
white while the main character, Jonas, sees the various colors of the world.
Throughout the opening scene, he makes a voice over upon the life living in
his community and there are texts upon each of the rules everyone must
follow. Jonas is a regular boy who is trying to figure out what is his life
purpose without being classified as “different” in the community. The moods
of the film are gloomy, strained, and optimistic; the tone of it is dark, intense, and heroic. |

|
Beat II: The
Inciting Incident |
It is the central theme or premise of
the film. The message, the truth you want to reveal by the end of your

What is the purpose or reason for the movie? ·
What does the main character have to accomplish? |
||||||
|
|
|||||||
|
Describe Beat
II |
Asher, one of Jonas' best
friends stated that he hopes they did not select him to oversee waste
management. In the big picture, the story is about a coming-of-age film and a
boy finding his role in society. The purpose of the movie is to keep society
running smoothly, making sure people are safe, happy, and oblivious to what
they don’t know. The main character, Jonas, finds his purpose in life. |
||||||
|
Beat III: The
Set-Up |
Introduction of the main characters in
the film and an expansion of the opening image. ·
Present the main character's world as it is, and what is missing
in their life revealed.
|
||||||
|
Describe Beat
III |
Jonas is living in a community
which was built after the ruins. Nobody has any clue or memories of the past.
Society has rules to make sure there is equality. Nobody had a last name. What
is missing in Jonas's life is him knowing what he wants in life, his own life
purpose; he also sees thigs that other didn’t. He could see the world in all
its beautiful colors, while everyone else only see it as black and white. He
was different, upon which he did not want to be, because being so was not
accepted in society. |
||||||
|
|
|||||||
|
Beat IV: Catalyst |
A life-changing event that causes a
significant change in the main character's life. • A moment where the opportunity to go
on a journey is presented to the main character. • Life as it is, is changing. |
||||||
|
Describe Beat
IV |
Jonas is confused and
worried when his name is skipped at the Ceremony of Twelve, however the
reason that he was skipped was because he possesses all four attributes which
helps him to be selected as the new Receiver of Memory. His life is changing
as he now will be the person who has all the community’s memories which in
result will bring in emotions he has never felt before or even thought existed. |
